ANGELA DAVIS

(1944–PRESENT)

Activist, author, educator, and philosopher Angela Davis is one of the world’s most well-known human rights advocates.

Angela Yvonne Davis was born in Alabama. She attended a segregated school and experienced racial violence and injustice. The neighborhood she lived in was frequently targeted by the Ku Klux Klan, a hate group. These experiences had an impact on young Angela and stoked her passion for civil rights. As a Girl Scout, Angela and other troop members demonstrated against segregation. In her teens, she organized study sessions for students of all races, but they were disbanded by the police. Still, she carried on.

Angela studied at several universities and went on to become a professor, teaching students philosophy and feminist studies. She was an outspoken advocate of the US Communist Party, the Black Panther Party, the feminist and Anti-Vietnam movements, the LGBTQ+ community, and the movement to abolish prisons and the death penalty. In 1970, Angela was arrested. Prosecutors alleged she was involved in a crime committed by someone she knew. Her 18-month imprisonment sparked global outcry and radically influenced her future activism. She was found not guilty of all charges and released. The bestselling author continues to write, speak, and teach today.

“

You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.
